You know the sound. The wind that stops being wind and turns into something else. And you know the silence after. The group chat that goes quiet, then blows up all at once. ¿Están bien? ¿Y la casa?

For us in the diaspora, storm season hits twice. You’re scared for the family still on the island. And you’re scared for the house. La que heredaste, the one you’re building, the one you’re finally about to buy. You’re doing it all from a couch two thousand miles away, refreshing a radar map like it’ll change anything. We know that particular helplessness, watching a cone of uncertainty crawl across a screen while everyone you love is inside it.

Here’s the truth, prima to prima. You can’t stop the storm. But a house on the island is not helpless in front of one. The difference between la casa that comes through and la casa that doesn’t gets decided long before the first band ever hits. It gets decided in how the house was built, what it’s made of, and whether anybody thought about the wind and the water when they poured it. A storm doesn’t test your luck. It tests your construction.

As of 2026, the Atlantic season runs June through November, and NOAA is calling for a below-normal year. Eight to fourteen named storms, three to six becoming hurricanes, one to three of those major. On paper that sounds like a year to relax. But “below-normal” is a number about the whole Atlantic, not a promise about your roof. Ask anyone who lived through María in a supposedly quiet forecast. Basta una. It only takes one. And peak season runs mid-August through October. O sea, right now, while you’re reading this. The quiet months are behind us. The loud ones are here.

One thing you can actually do today, even from here. Get eyes on the three things that fail first. El techo and how it’s tied down, because a roof that lifts takes the whole house with it. The openings, ventanas y puertas, because once wind gets inside, it pushes up and out and the structure starts to come apart from within. And your backup for power and water, because half the time in Puerto Rico it isn’t the storm that takes la casa offline for weeks. It’s the grid. A house that keeps agua y luz after a storm is a house you can actually live in while the whole barrio waits on LUMA. That third one is the part mainland checklists never mention, and on this island it’s often the difference between staying home and evacuating.

And the materials matter more here than almost anywhere. Reinforced concrete, hormigón armado, runs about double the cost of block, and there’s a reason people on la isla pay it. Concrete, impact windows, a roof that’s properly anchored. En Puerto Rico those aren’t upgrades. That’s the floor for a house meant to stand through a Category 3. This is where the diaspora gets caught, because on the mainland you frame a house in wood and nobody blinks. Bring that assumption here and you build something the first serious storm treats like kindling. The island has its own rulebook, written in reinforced concrete, and it was written that way for a reason.

There’s a harder truth underneath the checklist too. Puerto Rico is one of the only places that has to build for a hurricane and an earthquake at the same time. Those two forces want different things from a structure. Wind wants to lift and pull. A terremoto wants to shake side to side. A house engineered for only one is exposed to the other, and a lot of older island homes were built for neither. That’s not a reason to panic about a house you already have. It’s a reason to know exactly what you’re standing on before you sink money into it, and to build any new work to the standard that answers both.

Checking la casa is the start. Knowing what to demand is the part that protects everything you’re putting in. The exact wind and seismic standards a Puerto Rico home has to meet.
